We recently got a very extensive and visual postcard from one of the northernmost regions in Europe. Our good friend, multi artist Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen, brought our joint artwork Hommage a Cadere to Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago between mainland Norway and Greenland. The result is a wonderful photographic documentation of a trip to the fascinating no man’s land.
Here, the colorful stick is paired with the brutal nature and the feeling of emptiness that best describes this collection of islands on the edge of the map. And the intriguing clash between the dark wasteland and the vivid colors looks a bit like life and death side by side.
The colorful stick is the totem of an artwork named Hommage a Cadere. It’s an ongoing art project between Mads Nørgaard and a few of our good friends. Originally conceptualized by Mads Nørgaard and Claus Due from Designbolaget, Hommage a Cadere was constructed by Thomas Poulsen aka. FOS. The exhibition was initially reenacted by Lilibeth Cuenca in our store front at Nørgaard paa Strøget and made into a series of prints for the occasion. Now, our stick is back again.
Hommage a Cadere is as a tribute to the late Polish/Romanian artist, Andre Cadere. Up until his passing in 1978, he was known for carrying his striped and colored stick around Paris where he lived, and everywhere else he went. The original performance artwork organically turned into a ongoing project that needed no gallery and had the world as it’s unknowing audience.
We are happy to carry on the torch of this beautiful thought, and continue to pay tribute to Andre Cadere. Even though we can’t bring the stick everywhere we go, we do our best to keep this great piece of art and the memory of Cadere alive.
We can’t wait to see where Hommage a Cadere goes next. Thanks for the amazing postcard, Lilibeth. And safe travels.
