International Women's Day 2025 at Mads Nørgaard – Copenhagen: Panel Debate, Performance, and Artworks by 100 Female Artists Honoring the Wisdom and Experience of Older Women

At Mads Nørgaard – Copenhagen, International Women's Day extends into a full week from March 1 to 8, featuring a panel debate, an exhibition, and a performance. Presenting the project Homage to Older Women by visual artist Hanne Lise Thomsen and curator Lise Grüner Bertelsen, the week will spotlight women's life experience and wisdom.

Homage to Older Women brings together 100 female artists – both young and old – from across the Nordics, showcasing individual works on billboards at stations throughout Copenhagen and the surrounding areas. By exhibiting these works in public spaces, Thomsen and Bertelsen aim to challenge the narrow beauty ideals often portrayed in commercial advertising and present alternative narratives and phases in life that people can relate to.

”Our culture is deeply fixated on beauty and often favors youth over age. This is especially evident in media representations of women and the unattainable beauty standards they promote. Additionally, there are narratives suggesting that older women are less desirable – both in the job market and in a sexual context. We are happy to challenge these outdated perceptions and fill Copenhagen with these powerful artists’ personal tributes to older women.” – Hanne Lise Thomsen

”We are deeply committed to celebrating International Women’s Day. For us, feminism is about power critique and the freedom to be who you want to be. We are proud to support Hanne Lise and Lise’s project, which puts life experience on the agenda. Especially in a time where beauty clinics are popping up, we believe that it’s both healthy and wise to celebrate the beauty of aging. We look forward to discussing this important topic and to experience incredible art.” – Mads Nørgaard

Homage to Older Women launches with an exhibition of all 100 artworks at Nørgaard paa Strøget from February 28 to March 10, alongside a panel debate on Saturday, March 1. Panelists include photographer and visual artist Fryd Frydendahl, visual and performance artist Molly Haslund, visual artist Noah Umur Kanber, and University of Copenhagen professor Anne Jerslev. The debate will be moderated by journalist Lene Johansen. Participation in the panel debate on March 1 requires registration via press@madsnorgaard.dk.
